Tile Clay

I generally use a porcelain/stoneware clay mixture, fired to 2200°F, for most of my tiles because it has an off-white, almost beige color that enhances the coloring and glaze that I apply to the surface. This is a very strong and durable material that can be installed on walls and floors in wet locations and even outdoors. The tiles are fired to 2200°F so the porcelain/clay is vitreous, or glass-like inside.

I also have used a clay that fires to a lower temperature for some tiles. This clay is bright white and has benefits when I want to use special coloring or special materials. When a tile mural has been made with this clay, the description will say so. These tiles should not be installed outdoors where freezing might occur.
